The book Pet Sale by Mick Inkpen is about a pet store closing and needing everything to go. A young boy walking in to check out the store finds a rat that wants to be bought for 1 cent. Many creatures are being sold even a Komodo dragon for 25 cents. Towards the end the boy realizes he has a total of a dollar in coins and is able to buy every creature in the store. This book is perfect for the standard since it is all about adding up coins up to a dollar that the boy has. The activity is fun because it resembles the rat that wanted to be bought by the boy for a penny. The activity will allow the students to practice their knowledge of coin collections up to a dollar.
